FXP Packages
This is a list of the most notorious FXP packages broken up by categories. The full list of FXP packages can be seen here.
Development
R is an integrated suite of software facilities for statistics: data manipulation, calculation and graphical display.
libconfig is a simple library for processing structured configuration files. This file format is more compact and more readable than XML and unlike XML, it is type-aware, so it is not necessary to do string parsing in application code. It is very compact and well-suited for memory-constrained systems like handheld devices. The library includes bindings for both the C and C++ languages. It works on POSIX-compliant UNIX systems (GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, FreeBSD) and Windows (2000, XP and later).
lua is a free software light-weight programming language designed for extending applications. Lua is also frequently used as a general-purpose, stand-alone scripting language.
meld is a visual diff and merge tool. You can compare two or three files and edit them in place (diffs update dynamically). You can compare two or three folders and launch file comparisons. You can browse and view a working copy from popular version control systems such such as CVS, Subversion, Bazaar-ng and Mercurial.
Emulators
dosbox is a DOS emulator/virtual machine for X11 and Unix. It allows you use many apps designed to run on DOS.
Games
celestia is a real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions.
nethack is a single-player dungeon exploration game. The emphasis is on discovering the detail of the dungeon. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.
rocksndiamonds is an arcade style game for Linux in the tradition of Boulder Dash and Emerald Mine.
supertux is a classic 2D jump'n run sidescroller game in a style similar to the original SuperMario games.
supertuxkart is a Free 3D kart racing game. You can play with up to 4 friends on one PC, racing against each other or just try to beat the computer.
Navigation
foxtrotgps is an easy to use, fast, lightweight mapping application for use with (or without) GPS.
Network
bogofilter is a mail filter that classifies mail as spam or ham (non-spam) by a statistical analysis of the message's header and content (body). The program is able to learn from the user's classifications and corrections.
icecat is the GNU version of the Firefox browser. Its main advantage is an ethical one: it is entirely free software. While the Firefox source code from the Mozilla project is free software, they distribute and recommend non-free software as plug-ins and addons. Also their trademark license restricts distribution in several ways incompatible with freedom 0.
pidgin-otr is Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging for Pidgin. It allows you to have private conversations over instant messaging when talking on Pidgin.
transmission is a lightweight open source BitTorrent client, providing useful functionality without feature bloat. It consists of a daemon, a GTK+, Qt and CLI client.
Office/Productivity
fontforge is an outline font editor that lets you create your own postscript, truetype, opentype, cid-keyed, multi-master, cff, svg and bitmap (bdf, FON, NFNT) fonts, or edit existing ones. It also lets you convert one format to another. FontForge has support for many Macintosh font formats.
inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Supported SVG features include shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, patterns, and grouping. Inkscape also supports Creative Commons meta-data, node editing, layers, complex path operations, bitmap tracing, text-on-path, flowed text, direct XML editing, and more. It imports formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and others and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.
libreoffice is a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites, and available on a variety of platforms. It is free software and therefore free to download, use and distribute.
nted is a GTK+ score editor. It intends to be really WYSIWYG: what you see on the screen is exactly what you get on printer output. It supports up to 4 voices per staff, drum notes, 5 lyrics lines, N-Tuplets, context changes, repeats with alternatives, configurable music instruments per staff, MIDI import/export, MusicXML import, Postscript export. Scores can be played through the ALSA sequencer.
puddletag is a audio tag editor for GNU/Linux similar to the Windows program Mp3tag. Unlike most taggers for GNU/Linux, it uses a spreadsheet-like layout so that all the tags you want to edit by hand are visible and easily editable.
rlwrap is a 'readline wrapper' that uses the GNU readline library to allow the editing of keyboard input for any other command. Input history is remembered across invocations, separately for each command; history completion and search work as in bash and completion word lists can be specified on the command line.
texlive (TeXLive binaries, support files, TeX formats) This package contains all binaries (including xindy, asymptote, and biber) and many support files, TeX formats and packages, and other files included in the TeXLive TeX distribution. This should be adequate for the needs of most TeX users. The remaining stuff can be found in texlive-extra, texlive-fonts, and texlive-docs.
Sound Tools
audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. With Audacity one can record live audio, convert tapes and records into digital recordings, edit Ogg, MP3, and WAV sound files, and much more.
lame is an educational tool to be used for learning about MP3 encoding. The goal of the LAME project is to use the open source model to improve the psycho acoustics, noise shaping, and speed of MP3.
lmms is a free cross-platform alternative to commercial programs like FL Studio, which allow you to produce music with your computer. This includes the creation of melodies and beats, the synthesis and mixing of sounds, and arranging of samples. You can have fun with your MIDI-keyboard and much more; all in a user-friendly and modern interface.
System Utilities
arj (Free Software implementation of arj archiver) is a portable version of the ARJ archiver, available for a growing number of DOS-like and UNIX-like platforms on a variety of architectures.
lhasa is a Free Software replacement for the Unix LHA tool, for decompressing .lzh (LHA / LHarc) and .lzs (LArc) archives. The backend for the tool is a library, so that it can be reused for other purposes. Lhasa aims to be compatible with as many types of lzh/lzs archives as possible. It also aims to generate the same output as the (non-free) Unix LHA tool, so that it will act as a drop-in free replacement. Note that lhasa is only for *decompressing*, not compressing/creating archives.
sshfs-fuse (Secure SHell FileSystem) is a file system for Linux capable of operating on files on a remote computer using just a secure shell login on the remote computer. On the local computer where the SSHFS is mounted, the implementation makes use of the FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace) kernel module.
Video Tools
kamerka takes photos using your webcam and shiny animated QML interface. Kamerka is an Qt4 app using KDE4 libraries. It uses Video4Linux to get image from webcam and is able to save photos. Interface is based on QML and uses it's possibilities to show easy to use animated UI.
ffmpeg is a complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and video. It includes libavcodec, the leading audio/video codec library.
ffmpeg2theora is a simple converter to create Ogg-Theora files. It currently provides only command-line interface to convert any files that ffmpeg can decode.
regionset allows you to check and set the region code of DVD drives.
Windows
conky is a system monitor for X originally based on the torsmo code. Since it's original conception, Conky has changed a fair bit from it's predecessor. Conky can display just about anything, either on your root desktop or in it's own window. Conky has many built-in objects, as well as the ability to execute programs and scripts, then display the output from stdout.
compton is a compositor for X, and a fork of xcompmgr-dana. Out of frustration with the low count of standalone lightweight compositors, compton was forked from Dana Jansens' fork of xcompmgr and refactored. Bugs were fixed and features were added.
feh is an image viewer at heart, though it does other cool stuff. feh features include simple image viewing, multiple image viewing (slideshow), multiple image viewing in multiwindows, image viewing in fullscreen, image list mode, loadable/unloadable listing, recursive file opening, saving/loading filelists, loading images via http, reloading after delay, montage creation, and more.
gtk-chtheme allows you to change your gtk+2.0 theme. Themes installed on the system are presented for selection and available for preview on the fly. This works very well for any user wanting to utilize a gtk2 theme for a window manager environment.
murrine-themes is a collection of Murrine family themes for GTK2, GTK3 and XFWM. Also, there are a few themes for metacity and openbox window managers that can be used if you have these installed.
obconf is a GTK+ tool to assist with the configuration of the Openbox window manager.
openbox is a standards compliant, fast, light-weight, extensible window manager. Openbox was written first to comply with standards and to work properly. Openbox is fully functional as a stand-alone working environment, or can be used as a drop-in replacement for the default window manager in the GNOME or KDE desktop environments.
openbox-menu is a pipemenu for Openbox window manager. It provides a dynamic menu listing installed applications. Most of the work is done by the LXDE library menu-cache.
openbox-themes package which provided by Debian contains various themes for the Openbox window manager.
tint2 is a simple panel/taskbar intentionally made for openbox3, but should also work with other window managers. It's based off ttm code.
