FSF officially informed us that "Freenix" passes the FSDG test, and so we are adopting it as the name of our GNU distribution effective immediately. We would like to create a new web front at http://www.freenix.net/ dedicated to the distribution, with hooks into the FreeSlack wiki, which will see some cosmetic changes in the coming days.

One attempt of interest is at https://freeslack.space/

I personally think this is right up our alley, but I would love to let this matter sit in the sunshine for a while, in the hope that even more and better ideas will emerge.

That is excellent news. I have a few comments:

1): I am aware of the abandoned Ubuntu spinoff meant for embedded systems that never really saw the light of day. However, some searches have brought up a few other Freenix references. These may or may not be problematic, I just wanted to bring them to our attention so that they don't catch us off guard in the future. I don't think any of these present problems for the FSF endorsement, but they still might be worth keeping on the radar, just in case.

A current, active project is the FreeNIX Security Labs, offering "Penetration Testing and Free Software", whose site has seen activity as recently as January of this year. Might not be an issue, but they do seem current, active, and in a similar field.

https://www.freenixsecurity.net/en/

There were also some software conferences by that name, but the last one was over a dozen years ago.

I'm not much of a gamer at all, so I was surprised to come across the Freenix character in Pokemon, and I have no idea what the implications might be:

There also seems to be a few random social media profiles, and a concert series, but I don't think there is much of a conflict here.

2): I have already set up a subdomain for any mirroring purposes. Once we have a new ISO and repo to mirror, I'll convert my rsync script to put it all at the new subdomain:

(I'll take down the borrowed dog photo eventually, I just thought it was hilarious... "We're still setting up, come back later...")

3): The freeslack.space page might be a good start, although I'm not married to it at all. If anyone has any other suggestions or example sites of the direction we'd like to go in, this might be a good place to post links. I personally aim for simplicity and static pages as much as possible, just FYI.

https://www.freenixsecurity.net/en/ looks like the only project where some confusion could arise. Let's just hope they are chill about this. We are, and it's not like they are competing with us in the product space. I mean, they are a security/penetration outfit with a web front that refuses to work without javascript. Perhaps it's one of those ironic websites Wink

Aren't you in charge of that domain? I still don't see anything wrong with it being an alternative front of some sort.

Thanks for the additional pair of eyes on this diligence ... you found most of the things that I also found in my vetting of the name.

One additional thing I found was a French guy that owns the "freenix.org" domain, but I was able to determine that he only uses it for one personal/private email address, and even that isn't his primary email address. I've contacted him once, and he just kinda vaguely brushed off my plea to acquire the domain. I'm hoping that with the extra "street-cred" of our actual distribution naming/branding, I may be able to convince him.

The "freenix.com" domain is parked with a domain squatter ... I've actually submitted an offer to buy it, but no response yet. Obviously, I won't be willing to pay much for it, but I wanted to see how committed the squatter is, with the intent of waiting him out, and alot of badgering Smile

All in all, I'm convinced that the viable presence around any "freenix" naming/branding has been basically non-existent, and so with just a bit of time and continued activity/progress around our product, we'll become entrenched in the "freenix" real-estate.

Please feel free to bring up any other insights, or further items of concern, if you run across any.

I finally had some time to rework the wording and images a bit. Now we have a Freenix front end that looks like this:

http://freenix.3space.xyz/

This is the same as what is currently at:

https://freeslack.space/

which I do own/control. So, yes, we can continue to use that as an alternative domain, it doesn't expire until some time in 2020 I believe. I just figured we wanted to separate ourselves as much from the "freeslack" name.... "It's a conspiracy man, they're trying to take away all of our SLACK!" Shocked

I've made the site entirely static; only html, css, and images (i.e. no scripts at all) plus all of the local links are relative, which means you can just unpack this archive:

https://freenix.3space.xyz/stuff/site_files.tar.gz

into any web directory and it should work out of the box without any tweaking.

I admit, some of the images could use a reworking. I'm not a graphics guy, it's not my strong point. However, images can easily be replaced, not a problem if we come up with some nicer images to go with the text and links.

Feedback is welcome, I've just been strapped for spare time these past few months. Hopefully this summer will allow for play time.

What's next? Eventually, we'll spin up a new ISO I imagine, yes? Once that's done, I'll generate a new torrent and all of that good stuff.

thoughts?
